Finalists Announced in 2016 Perth Airport WA Tourism Awards

Finalists in the prestigious 2016 Perth Airport WA Tourism Awards were announced this evening at an event attended by more than 130 tourism operators and industry representatives.

The Perth Airport WA Tourism Awards, now in its 44th year, highlight the quality and diversity of tourism attractions, amenities and experiences that Western Australia has to offer.

Tourism Council WA CEO Evan Hall said the Perth Airport Tourism Awards reflected the passion and professionalism of tourism operators in WA and these awards showcased the best in the industry.

Backpacker change will cost tourism jobs

The Federal Government’s announcement regarding the backpacker tax will hit the tourism industry, resulting in less tourists and jobs across Western Australia.

Under the new plan, the Passenger Movement Charge will be increased to $60.00 per international visitor to compensate for a 19 per cent tax rate for working holidaymakers from their first dollar earned, rather than the 32.5 per cent rate originally proposed. The Passenger Movement Charge is hidden in the upfront cost of return airline tickets to Australia.

New liquor reforms to enhance WA tours

7 September 2016

A new era begins for tourism operators in WA today, as reforms allowing exemptions to liquor licensing come into effect.

The reforms mean that for the first time, tour operators genuinely marketed as a tourism business (eg. Accredited Tourism Business) will be able to include alcohol in their marine or land tour without a liquor licence. The alcohol must be included in the tour price and is limited to five drinks per person, per day.

Make WA a “catch and cook” seafood destination

Tourism Council WA has welcomed today’s announcement by the Premier which cuts red tape around catching rock lobster by charter operators and their guests.

The changes will mean Western Australia can now be promoted as a premium international destination for fresh seafood “catch and cook” tourism.

Backpacker slump hits WA international tourism

The number of backpackers visiting Western Australia for work has slumped, contributing to poor results for the State in the latest international tourism figures.

The latest results from the International Visitor Survey show the number of working holiday makers coming to Western Australia dropped by more than 11 per cent in the year ending June 2016.

TV ads show how Tourism Works for WA

Tourism Council WA has today launched a major $250,000 campaign to promote the value of tourism for Western Australia in the run up to the 2017 state election.

The campaign’s TV ads show how Tourism Works to create jobs for WA, featuring locals doing an amazing array of jobs created by tourism dollars. The ads will go to air this week in Perth and across regional WA.

“Tourism now creates 97,000 jobs each year,” said Tourism Council WA CEO Evan Hall.

Tourism grows to 97,000 jobs in WA

Figures released today by the Australian Government show tourism now creates 97,200 jobs in Western Australia, an increase of 3,500 jobs on the previous year.

The State Tourism Satellite Accounts also showed that WA tourism has grown by $1 billion, to $13 billion in visitor spending each year. This spending creates $10 billion in Gross State Product, including $1 billion in taxation revenue.

State of Origin A Tourism Coup

Tourism Council WA has applauded the State Government for securing Perth Stadium as the venue for the second 2019 State of Origin match, to be held on a weekend in June.

The Council estimates the event will attract at least 20,000 visitors who will spend $15 million in WA, creating more than 160 full time equivalent jobs across the State.

“Securing the State of Origin is an absolute coup for Western Australia,” said Tourism Council WA CEO Evan Hall.

Western Australians re-embrace the great regional holiday

The latest figures from the National Visitor Survey show that in the 12 months to March 2016 intrastate visitor numbers grew 12.4%, and their spending grew 26.2% to $4 billion, as Western Australians reembraced the holiday at home.

The growth in intrastate visitor numbers was driven by leisure visitors (up 17.9%) and business travellers (up 19%).  Tourism Council WA CEO Evan Hall said the low Australian dollar, lower cost of fuel and good value food and accommodation was making the WA regional holiday highly appealing.

New tourism ads deserve maximum exposure

Tourism Council WA has welcomed the Just Another Day in WA campaign launched today by Tourism WA. The Tourism Council is delighted that WA is getting back into the interstate market and wants the government to maximise the budget to show the ads to the east coast of Australia.

 “Sometimes we forget that what is an everyday experience for Western Australians, is an amazing experience for visitors” said Tourism Council WA CEO Evan Hall.
