Tourism excellence rewarded at Gala Dinner

Western Australia’s top tourism operators and experiences have been recognised for their commitment to excellence tonight at the 2015 Perth Airport WA Tourism Awards Gala Dinner at Crown Perth.

The Awards, which showcase the best in the industry for their outstanding customer service and business excellence, were handed out tonight in front of more than 750 industry representatives.

Tourism welcomes Regional Express airline to the West

Tourism Council WA CEO Evan Hall has welcomed today’s announcement that Regional Express (REX) is the preferred tenderer to fly the regulated routes from Perth to Albany and Esperance.

The entry of REX to Western Australia will fill the critical gap left in the wake of Virgin vacating the south west regional routes. Tourism Council WA is awaiting official news on the outcome of the remaining route tenders for regional WA, such as Monkey Mia, Kalbarri and Geraldton.

Tourism to employ 13,000 new WA workers by 2020

5 November 2015

Tourism will grow as a major employer for Western Australians over the next five years, with close to 13,000 new workers needed in the industry by 2020.

The Australia Tourism Labour Force Report: 2015 – 2020, released by Austrade late yesterday, shows 12,964 workers will be needed in the WA tourism industry by 2020, including more than 5,800 skilled workers.

Whale swim to boost WA’s eco reputation

The addition of swimming with humpback whales to WA’s tourism offering will boost the range of ecotourism experiences the State has to offer, which are extremely popular with visitors.

Tourism Council WA CEO Evan Hall said the experience, which will be trialled in Ningaloo Marine Park next year, was well suited to Western Australia’s brand and reputation as a location with a coastal lifestyle and unique wildlife encounters.

Tourism Council WA CEO Evan Hall said the level of participation in the awards and the high standard of entrants reflected the passion and professionalism of tourism operators in WA.

Visitor Centres prove valuable economic asset for WA

Western Australia’s network of Visitor Centres makes a significant contribution to the State’s economy, injecting $117 million annually and creating more than 900 local jobs.

Research commissioned by Tourism Research Australia and Tourism WA, carried out by Metrix Consulting, reveals that Visitor Centres encourage visitors to do more and stay longer in the region they visit, meaning visitors spend more during their stay.

WA tourism businesses have seized a unique opportunity to tap into the booming Chinese outbound tourism market, with the State becoming Australia’s first to qualify as a CHINA READY destination.

The announcement was made in front of a quarter of a million travel agents and tourism industry representatives at the China National Tourism Administration (CNTA) & Tianjin Government China Tourism Industries Exposition.

Interstate tourism to WA slumps, 2000 jobs lost

Western Australia has suffered a disappointing slide in the number of interstate visitors travelling to the State – the only State to suffer a decline in interstate tourist numbers.

Statistics from the latest National Visitor Survey show interstate visitation to WA declined 2.1 per cent in 2014-15, leading to a whopping 21 per cent decrease in visitor expenditure.

WA falling behind in international tourism stakes

Western Australia continues to lose out to other States when it comes to attracting international visitors, with the lowest growth in international visitor spend in the country in the 12 months to June 2015.

The latest figures from the International Visitor Survey reveal that growth in international visitor spend in WA was 1.22% in the year ending June 2015 – the lowest increase in the country and well behind the national increase of 11.48%.
