WA wins as Perth announced 2017 National Tourism Awards host

Western Australian tourism businesses picked up a total of 10 medals at the 2016 Qantas Australian Tourism Awards in Darwin tonight, as Perth was named the host for next year’s ceremony.

Businesses from WA were awarded two gold medals, four silver and four bronze medals at the awards ceremony which recognises outstanding tourism operators from around Australia. All WA finalists in the national awards were gold medallists in their categories as announced at the Perth Airport Western Australian Tourism Awards in November 2016.

Tourism Council WA CEO Evan Hall said hosting the Qantas Australian Tourism Awards in Perth early next year would be a way to showcase how Perth had evolved as a destination. The event is anticipated to bring more than 800 tourism industry leaders from around the nation together in Perth.

“Compared with when Perth last hosted the National Tourism Awards in 2011, a lot has changed – we will have a new Stadium, many more hotel rooms and a much more vibrant city overall,” he said.

“As the WA medallists in tonight’s awards demonstrate, the State has a great range of amazing tourism experiences on offer for visitors and we look forward to showcasing our destination, experiences and products to the nation when the tourism industry travels to Perth en masse next year.”

Albany’s The Beach House at Bayside, which underwent a major expansion and added three rooms to the property this year, was awarded a Gold Medal in the Hosted Accommodation category at tonight’s ceremony – the first National medal for the business.

North West business Horizontal Falls Seaplane Adventures picked up its first National Gold medal in the Adventure Tourism category, which follows a Bronze medal in the Unique Accommodation category in last year’s award program.
