Tourism Council WA has today welcomed the Federal Government funding allowing direct Qantas flights from Johannesburg and Auckland to land at Perth Airport.
Tourism Council WA CEO Evan Hall said the Federal funding was needed to address border processing at Terminal 3 for flights from Johannesburg and Auckland.
Tourism Council WA had advocated for funding for border processing in order to fast track additional international routes to Perth Airport.
The Federal Government funding will assist the Australian Border Force and the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry to deliver additional border services at airports and enable Perth Airport to increase border and biosecurity capacity.
Tourism Council WA congratulated the Federal Tourism Minister Hon Don Farrell, Perth Airport and Qantas on their collaboration for securing these new direct flights.
Mr Hall said the funding would allow an additional 155,000 seats in and out of Perth each year, with fares available to be booked now and expected to generate jobs and inject millions into the State economy.
“This funding will allow for additional international flights to Perth, including from South Africa, and boost visitation to Western Australia,” Mr Hall said.
Mr Hall said as Western Australians headed overseas in increasing numbers, Western Australia had to attract international visitors to WA and onwards to regional destinations.
