Recruitment, Staffing and Workplace Relations for Tourism Businesses Workshop (Albany)

This workshop is ideal for small tourism businesses taking on staff for the first time, or those facing challenges recruiting and managing staff. 

Recruitment, staffing retention, and workplace relations is a key issue for small tourism businesses. Tourism businesses face seasonal and peak period staffing issues and have to contend with a wide range of Federal and State Awards and employment conditions. 

This workshop will discuss topics that will support small tourism businesses in sourcing staff and navigating both the Federal and State workplace relations systems and its legal requirements.

The workshop covers the following topics:

  • Marketing and recruiting for tourism staff and peak periods
  • Understanding international visa requirements and schemes:
    • The Seasonal Worker Program and the Pacific Labour Scheme
    • Working holidaymaker visa requirements
  • Understanding Federal and State workplace relations systems
  • Award coverage for employees
  • Minimum workplace standards for tourism businesses
  • Recordkeeping and meeting legal requirements
  • Consultation, resolving issues, and avoiding penalties and risk

ABOUT THE PRESENTERS

KAREN PRIEST

Karen Priest’s extensive career spans 30 years in the tourism and hospitality sector in the United Kingdom, South Africa, New Zealand, and Western Australia. She has served on several tourism industry boards and committees, including Tourism Council Western Australia (TCWA), and is known for developing and implementing strong growth strategies using her effective leadership, sales, marketing, communication, and presentation skills.

Karen is the Principal of Smart Tourism, a boutique marketing consultancy which provides strategic solutions and advice to the tourism industry. She has an extensive hotel management background and gained significant destination marketing and management experience working in senior roles with various regional, state and national tourism agencies, including expertise in staff recruitment and sourcing talent.

With her passion for tourism marketing and helping businesses succeed she is highly regarded by the industry as a specialist in her field.

DESIREE DYER

Prior to joining CCIWA as a Legal Associate, Desiree worked as a Solicitor in Workplace Relations and Safety. Highly sought after by clients for both her advice and training facilitation skills, Desiree brings a valuable mix of specialist legal expertise and experience in employment law, workplace relations and safety, together with extensive experience in organisational development and training design including at Rio Tinto Iron Ore, BHP Billiton Iron Ore, Leighton Contractors and Water Corporation.
