What's Included?
The Connecting to Culture Toolkit is a practical tool to engage respectfully and confidently with First Nations culture and communities to enhance the local tourism sector’s cultural inclusivity. The toolkit directs businesses to authoritative sources to ensure you receive culturally appropriate, accurate, and community-endorsed information.
The national Connecting to Culture Toolkit was developed with the Australian Tourism Industry Council’s First Nations Reference Group, and was supported by the Australian Government through Austrade’s Quality Tourism Framework Grant. The Connecting to Culture Toolkit is supported by Australia’s Tourism Industry Council national partner Tourism Australia.
The Connecting to Culture Toolkit covers:
Assess your awareness and application of cultural protocols, such as recognising Traditional Owners, performing Acknowledgement of Country, and engaging with First Nations representative bodies.
Evaluate how your business incorporates First Nations culture into your products and services, including consultation with Elders and obtaining permissions for cultural representation.
Ensure that your tourism offerings are culturally respectful, involve First Nations people, and contribute to local First Nations events and initiatives.
Assess your business's understanding and practices regarding First Nations cultural awareness.
Examine the employment and engagement of First Nations people within your tourism businesses.
